About the Artist

Painting Is An Exploration
Ellen Laetitia Jones McNair
I started painting in 2020, several years after retiring as a Professional Development Specialist for school librarians in northern Virginia and moving to Wilmington, NC. I greatly enjoy the intuitive aspect of painting and the study of composition through different elements of shapes, line, and color. I don't know how a painting is going to end when I start it and, as I near the finish line, I often spend more time looking at it than I do painting. This process is meditative for me - I enjoy it immensely.
The lines in my work have two sources of inspiration: First, seeing a rhythmic heart valve on a sonogram - it was both wild and predictable, a thread waving at me during a sonogram after having a small stroke. It moves every day, the same way, from the first of life until the last moment. It was a wild and flimsy nuisance - but this tiny thread is a hard worker. The image of that little thread will be with me forever. The lines in my work are also inspired by the the tall and often crooked loblolly pines in the marshes around the Cape Fear region.
There is a collaged piece of the 1969 Britannica in each of my paintings.
